Welcome to Art!

Hello… I’m starting my 3rd year as the art teacher at Mary B Neal Elementary. I am originally from Northern Virginia and I have been living here in Charles County for the past 13 years. I received my undergraduate degree in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and I also attended the University of Florida where I earned my Masters’ Degree also in Art Education. When I’m not doing "teacher" stuff, I enjoy traveling internationally, but when I’m stateside you can find me on a golf course or cheering on some of my favorite sports teams!!

I welcome and value parent involvement throughout the year. Would love to hear from you, and you are welcome to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns you may have.

This year in art studio, your student will be doing all sorts of amazing things. The purpose of Elementary Art is to expose students to the tactile, tangible, hands-on learning experiences students need for overall academic and social growth to prepare for middle and high school, college, career, and beyond. We will do this by supporting content knowledge acquisition and providing concrete, real-world life skills that will stay with students for a lifetime. We’ll learn about color theory, drawing methods and basic painting technique. We’ll also talk about identity and how our students can express who they are through images. All the while, I’ll be pulling in math, language arts and social studies connections for some sneaky cross-curricular learning. I know everyone is not a great artist and even some do not enjoy art, I will meet them where they are; with the goal that all students will leave art with a strong capability to solve problems creatively, which is a highly trendy skill in today’s society.

Field Trip
5th Grade parents stay tuned for details on the trip to The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery (May 2019) where we will explore their collection of men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development, and culture of the people of the United States.

Art Show
May 20, 2019

The majority of the supplies that will be needed throughout the year will be supplied by the school including sketchbooks and portfolios. So this year I won’t be asking you for much; but if you happen to stumble across these next few items, I along with our student artist we’d appreciate it.
Old magazines
Yarn (all colors)
Loose Fabric
Cotton Swabs
Wrapping Paper Tubes
Paper Towel Tubes
I will have a table set up during Back to School night (September 20) to receive the items. And if you don’t have any then, I will take them whenever you have them, just send them to school when your student has art class.
